Step into the traditions of the Australian High Country.
What Is the Stockman Experience?
Spend a day at Snowy Wilderness discovering the horses, skills, stories and traditions that helped shape life in the Australian High Country.
A hands-on, non-riding experience for anyone who would like to get closer to the horses and experience something of the practical skills and traditions of the Australian stockman.
You don't need to know anything about horses before you arrive. Come prepared to have a go.
The Experience
You will meet your hosts at the Woolshed, take a briefing and be introduced to the day ahead. From there we make our way to the Holding Yards, the heart of the experience.
Watch our horsemen and women work with the horses, then take your turn in the round yard with hands-on horsemanship from the ground.
Meet some of our brumbies and hear their story, and the part horses have played in the lives of the people who worked and lived in this country.
Around the middle of the day we break for a Bushman's Lunch. Good food, good company and time to enjoy the surroundings.
The afternoon turns to the practical skills of life in the High Country. Depending on the day, that might be leatherworking or another traditional stockman skill.
Before the day finishes we return to the horses to build on the morning. Every horse is different, and every day with horses is different.
Every part of the day happens inside Snowy Wilderness. Snow gums and granite, mountain streams and open valleys, with brumbies and wildlife sharing the country.
These skills were worked out here, by people who needed them. You spend the day in the same country.
On the Day
Horses, weather and life in the High Country don't always follow a timetable, and that is part of the experience.
Activities and their order may be adapted to suit the horses, the weather and the conditions on the day, while remaining true to the spirit of the Stockman Experience.
The purpose stays the same: a genuine, hands-on introduction to horsemanship, traditional stockman skills and a way of life that has been part of the Australian High Country for generations.
