Our Story

More than a trail ride.

Truly connecting with the High Country, not just riding through it.

Snowy Wilderness exists to introduce people to the Australian High Country through participation. You catch and care for your own horse, learn practical skills, ask questions, and share stories around the fire.

The country sets the pace. Horses stay at the centre of everything we do, and no two weeks here are ever quite the same.

The purpose

Horse riding is the means,
insight is the outcome.

We are not selling a scenic ride or a bed for the night. We share the traditions, horses, history and culture of the Australian High Country with people who want to understand them properly.

Guests arrive expecting beautiful country. Most leave having learned something they did not expect to, about the horses, the traditions, and the people who carried them forward.

The Land

Private country,
bordering a national park.

Our country runs to seven and a half thousand acres near Jindabyne, sharing a boundary with Kosciuszko National Park. It is not a number on a brochure. It is private valleys with no one else in them, mountain views from remote camps, and river crossings reached on tracks the horses leave behind.

Much of it is country most people will never otherwise see, because no road takes you there. Brumbies, wild deer, kangaroos, wombats and wedge-tailed eagles share it with the horses.

The High Country is not just a backdrop. It is a working landscape, shaped by generations whose lives were inseparable from it.

The people

A good guide knows
when to say nothing.

A guide's job runs well beyond leading the way. Each one is responsible for the safety and wellbeing of both guests and horses, and for reading the country as you travel through it.

Not every moment needs narrating. Some of the country is best met in silence. Our guides draw you into the daily routines of camp, so confidence grows from doing rather than being told.

Come and see

Better understood from the saddle

Snowy Wilderness was built because some things are better understood from the saddle than from a description. Join us and you become part of the High Country's story for a time, whether for a single day or a full week.

There is no substitute for time in the saddle, care for a horse, and a night spent around a fire in the mountains.
